Important Note about Facebook and Data Privacy
You’ve probably recently heard about Facebook in the news. To summarize, the heart of the issue is that our world is becoming increasingly interactive and dependent upon technology, and as users, we each leave a trail of data.
The government is trying to figure out its role in protecting its citizens’ privacy. The Cambridge Analytica Facebook scandal has brought this issue into the U.S spotlight. What that means for us as marketers is that we will have to change the current way we interact with Facebook as the platform adapts to becoming increasingly more transparent about what they are doing with users’ data.
Along those same lines, The European Union has been working on data privacy issues as well. Starting May 25, The General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) compliance will begin. Since both Facebook and Google have European users, they are subject to GDPR compliance. Both Facebook and Google have publicly stated that they will adhere to GDPR. This change in policy will also affect how we marketers utilize the data they provide.
One of the more notable changes for Facebook and Google is it will affect how we target ads. Many businesses use other Google products, such as: Analytics, Tag Manager, Optimize, Attribution, Data Studio, etc. and changes will be coming to those products, too. For most of you, you likely won’t feel the burden of the Google changes. However, if Resolute is handling some of these operations for you, we will be examining how it might impact your business more closely.
Third party social media management tools, such as Hootsuite, Sprout Social, Buffer etc. will also be affected and many of those changes have already taken place. We’ll be reaching out to you directly if we discover these changes have a direct impact on your marketing efforts.
The digital world is constantly evolving, and the reality is we anticipate more changes as these regulations unfold. I’ve hyperlinked this email with articles that I find to be beneficial and will offer more in-depth information to those interested.
We still believe digital marketing to be one of the most effective forms of marketing, but we also believe in the right to protect the privacy of those to whom we’re marketing. You’re engaging with Resolute to stay up on the latest trends so we can always remain on the cutting edge of technology in a way that’s ethically sound.
